“Kid’s Shop” Opens to Knox County Children This Saturday!

The first Saturday morning in December may be the busiest day of the year for The Clothes Closet thrift store in Edina. The annual occurrence is the time of year when all of the best merchandise is carefully moved to the building next door, sorted, arraigned and given away.

The pop-up store is known to locals as the “Kid’s Shop” because only Knox County children may shop there and everything inside is free. It opens only once per year.

Children come to the Kid’s Shop to shop for people living in their households. There are no requirements to participate other than being a child who lives within Knox County.

Clothes Closet volunteers set up the special “shop” in the Harris Building next door to the thrift store and stock it with hundreds of new and gently used gifts for people of all ages.

Children are escorted through the shop by a volunteer aimed to help them find the perfect gifts for everyone in their households.

The gifts are festively wrapped and tagged by another brigade of volunteers before each child leaves with an armful of holiday cheer ready to be placed under the Christmas tree.

During the hubbub of children making their rounds at the Kid’s Shop, parents and caretakers are kept busy perusing the thrift store next door.

The Clothes Closet is part of the Knox County United Methodist Parish. The thrift store is entirely driven by volunteers and makes countless contributions to the Knox County community by turning funds collected at the thrift store into financial support.

The Knox County Clothes Closet contributes to everything from emergency equipment for volunteer first responders to scholarships while frequently giving to those experiencing financial hardships.

Anyone who would like to donate new, gently used gifts or homemade crafts for the children to choose from at this year’s “Kid’s Shop” can by dropping donations off at the Clothes Closet before December 6 with a note specifying the donation is “for the Kid’s Shop”.

The annual Kid’s Shop event will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, with a rain/snow date of December 14. All Knox County children age four to 11 (preschool and elementary school-aged) are invited and encouraged to attend.
