Leslie A. “Les” Sheets, 98, of Edina, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Edina, Missouri.
He was born on August 19, 1921, in Arcadia, Kansas, the son of Wilson Anthony and Emma Pearl Bradberry.
Les grew up in Arcadia and Fort Scott, Kansas, where he worked with his dad at the Catholic Hospital. He moved to Northeast Missouri at the age of 14 and worked in Shelbina, farming for Taylor and Bishop and Novelty, Missouri for Greenly Farms.
Les was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Marquardt, on July 4, 1946, in Kirksville, Missouri.
Les and Mary moved to Edina, to make their home. Les worked many jobs including, a special deputy and jailor for the City of Edina, janitor at the courthouse, and post office. They owned and operated “Les’s Trash and Trucking” from 1964 until the late 70’s, while picking up trash he always had bubble gum for the local kids. He later worked for Kelly Furniture until his retirement. Les served 55 years on the Edina Volunteer Fire Department and was close friends to all those that volunteered.
Les enjoyed riding his Harley, traveling with Mary, and his dogs throughout his life, but most of all he loved spending time with his grandson, going to ball games, and his great grandchildren.
Les is survived by his daughter, Jan James of Edina, Missouri, a grandson, Travis James and Sarah Hass of Brashear, Missouri and his children Caylie and Hunter James; and his constant companions, Parker and Jaxx; two sisters, Juanita Smith of Neodesha, Kansas and Louise Wilber of Wickenburg, Arizona; a brother, L.B. Sheets of Clarksburg, Missouri; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Mary Sheets on March 20, 2011; and his parents, Wilson and Emma Sheets, his siblings, Ralph Sheets, Irene Herro, Thelma Sheets, Wilma Woods, Jay Sheets and Claud Sheets.
Funeral Services will be Sunday, November 3, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.
Visitation will be Sunday from 12:00 Noon until service time at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville, Missouri.
Jerry Holman and Mike Fox will celebrate his life and Casket Bearers will be Travis James,
Mike James, Hunter James, Martin Edwards, Phillip Spory, and Bob Corbin.
