Clark Co. Historical Society Weighs In

The Clark County Historical Society board of directors and the membership are disappointed that the County Commission and the "Courthouse Committee" are determined to destroy the historical Clark County Courthouse in order to build a new facility. We feel that they have not explored a logical substitution of that decision. While we agree that the 1871 building is in poor shape and needs extensive rehabilitation tearing down such a valuable historic site has more negatives than modernizing and adding an annex to expand office space. Mr. Miles from the Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Site told the citizens that there is a sensible, much less expensive solution. We do not feel that the Commission and the "Courthouse Committee" have informed the county voters of the alternatives available, just stressing the current condition of the original courthouse.   We would encourage the voters to vote "no" on the tax increase and bond issuance put forth by the county at the November 3 election and put pressure on
the Commission to explore other plans and make the citizens aware of those plans rather than pushing through funding that will put the Clark County taxpayers in heavy debt for years and years to come. We have a very valuable building, unique in the state and if destroyed we will lose an unusual, noble and precious landmark. The historical value can never be replaced.
