Mary A. Hamann, age 91, of the Illinois Veterans Home, formerly of 1321 Koetters LN, died on Friday, July 25, 2014 in Blessing Hospital. She was born on March 25, 1923 in Cartersville, Iowa a daughter of Henry J. & Kathryn (Hart) Hickey. She married Carl F. Hamann on December 2, 1942 in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church by Msgr. P.J. Fox.
Mary attended St. Joseph’s School in Edina, MO, rural schools in Iowa, and Sacred Heart Academy in Rockwell, Iowa. She graduated from Baring High School in 1940. Mary had worked for the St. Joseph Home for the Chronically Ill. She worked for 23 years at Motorola, retiring as a supervisor. She had also worked with the Adams County Home Care and volunteered with RSVP at both St. Mary and Blessing Hospitals.
Mary loved to read, play cards, crossword puzzles and needlework. Mary was also an avid Cardinal baseball fan. Mary also greatly enjoyed crafts and she made and sold wooden footstools, Christmas card holders, wooden banks and other craft items along with her husband.
Mary was a 60 year member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and was a member of it’s Altar Society, serving as president for many years. She was a member of the Legion of Mary and the K of C Auxiliary.
Mary’s greatest enjoyment was the time spent with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by: FIVE CHILDREN: Kay Penrose; Michael Hamann and his wife Carolyn, Ronald Hamann and his wife Rose and Rick Hamann and his wife Maggie all of Quincy, and Kathy Calhoun of Canton, IL.
TEN GRANDCHILDREN: Brad Penrose and his wife Amy; Darrick Penrose, Jill Hart and her husband Kevin, Jennifer Leonard, Ryan Hamann and his wife Rebecca, Katie Hamann, Kevin Hamann, Bridget Hilbing and her husband Casey; Casey McCausland and his wife Tara, and Kelsey Green and her husband Jake.
15 Great-Grandchildren, 1 Great-Great grandchild along with numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her parents, a son -in-law: Eric Calhoun, one sister: Bernice McCaughy and four brothers: Sylvester, Henry, Jim and Jerry Hickey.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 9:00 in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 9:30 in St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Francis Catholic Church, Catholic Charities or to the Illinois Veterans Home Activities Fund.
