22nd Annual Parade of Champions to be October 12
Marching band fans will have a chance to see over twenty-two bands in action at the 22nd Annual Parade of Champions parade and field show competition at Kahoka, MO on Saturday, October 12, 2013.
The competition, sponsored by the Clark County R-1 Fine Arts Boosters, will begin with the parade, starting at 2:00 p.m. Twenty- one bands including CCR-1 Middle and High School bands will participate in the parade.
The field show competition will start at 5:00 p.m. at the CCR-1 activity field. Twelve bands will be participating in the competition. Local fans will enjoy exhibition performances by the CCR-1 Middle School band and the CCR-1 Marching Indians.
“I am really looking forward to the bands coming this year,” commented Mitzie Pitford, president of the Fine Arts Boosters, ”We have several new schools competing.”
Schools scheduled to appear in the parade are Highland High School, Canton High School and Junior High bands, South Shelby High School, Putnam County High School, Adair County R-1 High School, Mark Twain High School, Scotland County High School, North Callaway High School, and the CCR-1 Middle School and High Schools from Missouri; Warsaw High School, Unity High School, Pekin High School, Quincy High School and Quincy Junior High School from Illinois; Fort Madison High School and Davis County High School and Davis County Junior High from Iowa.
Bands competing in the field show event are Highland High School, Mark Twain High School, North Callaway High School and South Shelby High School in Missouri; Illini West Marching Chargers, Warsaw High School, Unity High School, Pekin High School, Hamilton High School, and Quincy High School in Illinois; Davis County High School and Mt Pleasant High School in Iowa.
Some of the field show programs that will be performed are “Escaping the Grid” music from the movie Tron by North Callaway High School, “Go West” by Quincy High, Mt Pleasant High School will be performing selections from Miss Saigon, Davis County High school’s theme is “James Bond 007”, and Illini West will be playing music by Queen.
Clark County High School will perform their field show “Heroes Fallen, Not Forgotten” as an exhibition.
“This year’s field show is particularly powerful and moving.” said Pitford, “It is a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
“I continue to be amazed at how smooth everything runs each year,” said Bob Dooley, CCR-1 High School music instructor. “That is thanks to our parents and volunteers. It couldn’t be done without them.”
“Our parents and community really step up and help make this competition a success,” added Pitford.
Winners of the parade and field show competitions will be selected on performance of music, marching precision, auxiliary units, and overall presentation. Special overall awards will be given to the best wind section, best percussion section, best auxiliary unit, best field commander, and best overall or the Sweepstakes Award.
“This is our biggest fundraiser for the Fine Arts Boosters,” said Pitford.
Sweatshirts, T-shirts, concessions, and souvenir programs will all be available for purchase. Admission will be charged for the field show competition.
“Parade of Champions is a wonderful day for our students to perform for their parents and the community,” stated Dooley. “It is also a wonderful way for the community to show its support of our student and fine arts at CCR-1.”
