Jewel Marie Skelton, 77, of Memphis, Missouri, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at the Scotland County Hospital in Memphis.
One of five children, she was born October 5, 1935 at La Harpe, Illinois, to Perry Riley and Zerita Faye Wright Meeks.
She attended school in Memphis and was a 1953 graduate of Memphis High School. Jewel married Edward James Skelton on March 9, 1967, in Memphis, Missouri. She was a long time member of the First Christian Church in Memphis before transferring her membership to the First Christian Church in Edina, Missouri, where she more recently resided and was a past member of Eastern Star.
Jewel was a homemaker and also worked as a cook at the Milton Senior Center for twenty-five years. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and had a passion for collecting angels.
Left to honor her memory is her son, David Bechtel of Milton, Iowa and his friend, Teresa Gibson, of Tucumcari, New Mexico; two granddaughters: Amanda Bechtel of Centerville, Iowa and Alaynah Bechtel, of Seymour, Iowa; a sister, Nancy June Barnes of Edina, Missouri; a brother, Perry Richard Meeks and his wife, Ruth, of La Mesa, California; a sister-in-law, Donna Meeks, of Memphis, Missouri, nieces, nephews and friends.
Jewel was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; a brother, Hollis Meeks and a sister, Virginia Meeks.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 6, at 2 P.M. at Memphis Funeral with Reverend Dewayne Wellborn officiating. Music was provided by Elaine Forrester and Angela Westhoff. Burial followed in South Prairie Cemetery in rural Van Buren County, Iowa.
