Blessing Health System holds free public health fair

The MEGA Brain comes to the Kroc Center for Blessing Health System’s 5th Annual “Treat Yourself Right Wellness Day,” on Saturday, February 16 from 8 am to 12:30 pm.

The MEGA Brain is an 18 foot long, 12 foot high inflatable model of the brain through which people can walk and learn about brain function, trauma and disease.

“Most of us are familiar with stroke, also known as ‘brain attack, when blood flow to the brain is interrupted,” said Maureen Kahn, president/chief executive officer, Blessing Hospital. “Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and causes more serious, long-term disabilities than any other disease.”

“Blessing Hospital is a nationally accredited Primary Stroke Center. Part of our mission is to educate the public and the MEGA Brain is an interesting and interactive way to do that,” she said.

The public is invited to Blessing Health System Wellness Day at the Kroc Center, 405 Vermont St., Quincy.  There is no cost to attend.

In addition to the MEGA Brain, the public can take advantage of free health screenings, visit educational booths and hear health presentations from area doctors at Blessing Wellness Day.

Free health assessments and screenings will be available to those 18 years and older, unless otherwise noted. The EKG, Carotid artery, and Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) screening require advance registration by calling 1-877-411-2468 or registering on-line at blessinghealthsystem.org/wellnessday. The ABI is for people 55 years and older only.

The following screenings and assessments do not require pre-registration: blood pressure; body fat assessment; grip and muscle strength assessment; mole check; and risk assessments for sleep apnea, colon disease and falls.

The American Red Cross will also hold a blood drive at Blessing Health System Wellness Day.  To make a blood donation appointment call 1-800-733-2767.

Before Wellness Day opens, between 8- 9 am, physicians will speak on a number of topics including heart health, diet and nutrition and wound therapy.

A variety of Blessing Health System services will be featured with educational booths throughout Wellness Day, 9 am to 12:00 pm.

At Noon, Blessing dieticians will hold a cooking demonstration and nutrition presentation.

The schedule for health screenings, informational booths and physician speakers is subject to change.
