Bill Schwanke, age 87, of Leonard, MO, died Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, MO. He was born September 2, 1924, in Macomb, IL, the son of Orin Fredrick and Hazel D. Bennett Schwanke.
On December 22, 1946, he was united in marriage to Lois Gillespie at Palmyra, MO. She survives.
Bill is also survived by three children, Carl (Leslie) Schwanke of Houston, TX, Patricia (Ray) Griffith of Novelty, MO and Alan (Sharon) Schwanke of Leonard, MO; eleven grandchildren, Daniel, Aaron and Rachel Schwanke, Denise Palmer, Curt and Ryan Griffith, Brandy Uhlmeyer, Jesse Schwanke, Moises, Manuel and Lian Markovich; fifteen great-grandchildren and one son-in-law, Peter Markovich.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sharon Markovich; one brother and one sister.
Bill was a graduate of Sweeny High School in Texas and attended the University of Missouri. He was a member of the Leonard Christian Church, proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and loved being a Marine. He enjoyed photography and keeping family history. He was a founding member of the Shelby County Christian Assembly and served on the board as their treasurer. He was also a member of the North Shelby School Board, Christian Campus Fellowship Board, ASCS Board and State Committee. Bill was so very proud of his family and cherished the time he could spend with them, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina on Friday, July 13, 2012, at 10:00 am with burial to follow at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, MO.
