Sidewalk and Parking Area Closed Around Shifting Building on Edina Town Square

Edina, Missouri – Wednesday, June 5, 2019 – A vacant building on the south side of the Edina Town Square has been deemed dangerous by Edina Police Chief Ryan Bishop.

The sidewalk and parking area on the north, west and south sides of the building were closed to the public this afternoon after it was determined the building has shifted.

“It shifted quite a bit over the last 48-hours,” said EPD Ryan Bishop. “I’ve contacted the building owner and he will be in town tomorrow.”

This is not the first time the area around 302 East Lafayette Street has been closed to the public. The building was deemed dangerous on March 27, 2018, after a noticeable shift, which caused some of the upper windows to shatter and a large crack on the southwest corner widened. After several months of no movement, the caution tape was removed and pedestrians and motorists were able to use the parking area and sidewalk around the building again.

According to Bishop, the building is under new ownership since the last time the area around it was closed to the public due to safety concerns.

City of Edina officials and law enforcement will be keeping an eye on the building as more rain is in the forecast.
