Mr. R. Kelley Rogers, age 77, former Macon Superintendent of Schools died Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Boone Hospital in Columbia, MO.
Kelley was born in Kirksville, MO July 29, 1933 a son of Robert Kelley and Juanita Faye Easley Rogers. He married Gloria Lee McCloskey September 2, 1956 in Edina, MO. She survives.
He was a graduate of Brasher High School, Truman State University in Kirksville, MO with a B.S. and an M.A. degree and the University of Missouri at Columbia in Advanced Studies. He graduated from Worsham School of Mortuary Science in Chicago, IL. and began working in the funeral business in Brasher in 1956 until 1964. Kelley worked as a School Administrator for many years with the following school districts, Knox County, MO, Marceline, MO, Macon, MO, Salisbury, MO, Bosworth, MO, Hubbard-Radcliffe, IA, Harmony, IA, Kansas City, MO and North Mercer, MO. Some of his professional highlights was his involvement in the reorganization of the Knox County Schools, serving on the Advisory Committee to State Commissioner of Education Arthur Mallory, being elected to the Board of Control, Missouri State High School Activities Association, serving as President of Missouri State High School Activities Association Board of Control, being active in Committee work of National Federation of State High School Activities, serving as officer in Missouri Association of School Administrators and he served as Superintendent of Schools for the Hubbard-Radcliff School Dist. in Iowa and helped to reorganize the district.
Kelley was a member of the Macon United Methodist Church in Macon where he served in various capacities over the years. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War serving from 1951 until 1953. He also had made many contributions to various boards including Girl Scouts of America and the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at the University of Missouri.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria Lee Rogers of Macon; one daughter, Traci Coons and her children Kyli, Nathaniel and Bradley Coons all of Keller, TX; one son Trent Rogers and his wife Stacey and their children Bryce and Kaitlyn Rogers all of Boonsboro, MD; one sister Ann Sue Campbell and her husband Cole of Edina, MO; several cousin’s including Jackie Harrison and her husband Russ of Kirksville, MO; sister-in-law Libby Davis and her husband Jerry of Canton and several nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister Nancy Rogers.
Funeral services were Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Macon United Methodist Church with Rev. Julius Ketsenburg and Rev. Jim Robinson officiating. Burial with Military Honors was in Linville Cemetery in Edina, MO.
