Red Team Pulls Out Last Second Victory In NEMO Boy’s Game

Ryan Falconer sank a three pointer with two seconds to play in a back and forth 2009 NEMO Officials Association Boy’s all-star game, pulling out a 73-70 win for the Red team.
Newtown-Harris all stater K.J. Cool helped erase an eight point deficit for his Blue Team with a three ball for a two point lead with 2:11 remaining in the game.
The NEMO Officials Association All Star Basketball Classic was held at the Kirksville Primary School Gym on Saturday, May 30, 2009. Players were selected from area graduating seniors by a coaches committee.
LaPlata’s David Fouch coached the Red Team while Newtown-Harris mentor Tim Cool led the Blue team.
David Fouch has guided LaPlata to the boy’s basketball final four. Tim Cool was part of the Bulldog’s Class 1 second place finish in 2009. Please visit www.nemonews.net for a complete player list.
The Red Team came out hot from the perimeter and grabbed a quick 15-3 lead. The Blue squad stormed back with a 17-2 run and took a 20-17 lead early in the second quarter. The blue unit scored 12 unanswered points during the streak.
K.J. Cool (Newtown-Harris HS) fired in a pair of Blue team three balls during the run.
Michael Brennan (Clark County HS) and Jacob Winkler (Schuyler County HS) helped trim the Red team lead to 17-14 at the close of the first quarter with inside buckets. The Red team held a 37-33 halftime edge.
The teams settled down in the second half. Michael Brennan scored for the Blue team for a 41-40 lead with 5:43 showing on the third quarter clock. Ethan Allen (Clark County HS) connected on a three pointer at the 4:49 mark for a 45-43 Blue advantage.
Kiley Watson (Brashear HS) sank a pair of blue team free throws at the 3:05 juncture of period three for a 49-45 lead. The Blue team led 51-45 with 2:05 showing on the third quarter clock and 60-52 after three quarters of basketball.
The Red squad embarked on a 9-1 run at the beginning of period four. Kyle Ellison (Highland HS) cut the deficit in half when he drilled a three ball, pulling the Red team within a 60-57 deficit. Ellison sank a free throw for a 60-58 blue lead with 6:30 to play in the game.
Darin Swisher (Kirksville HS) tied the game at 60 with a driving bucket at the 5:20 mark. Dennis Dent (Knox County HS) buried a three for a 63-61 red team lead with 4:33 showing on the fourth quarter clock.
The Blue team built a 66-61 lead on a pair of Trae Treasure (Brashear HS) free throws. K.J. Cool gave the blue team a 68-66 lead with 2:11 to play in the game with a home run ball.
Curtiss Bunch (LaPlata HS) tied the game at 68 with a bucket at the two minute mark. The score was tied at 70 from the one minute mark down to 16 seconds showing on the fourth quarter clock.
Jordan Smith (LaPlata HS) stopped K.J. Cool defensively with around 51 seconds to play in the game, preserving the tie. Curtiss Bunch found Ryan Falconer (Brookfield HS) open in the corner for the game winner.
Jacob Winkler led all scorers with 16 Blue team points. K.J. Cool fired in 15 points. Michael Brennan tallied eight points. Trae Treasure scored six blue team points. Kiley Watson scored four points while Ethan Allen fired in three points.
Dennis Dent led the Red team with 13 points, despite missing several minutes with a persistent cut to his arm. Ryan Falconer was in double figures with 12 points.
Kyle Ellison scored ten points for the Red team. Jordan Smith and Curtiss Bunch scored nine Red team points each. Mitchel Penn (Knox County HS) scored two points for the winning side.
