Maurine Elizabeth Krueger Kirkwood, 94, of Lynchburg, Virginia, died Sunday, February 22, 2009, at Westminster-Canterbury. She was the wife of the late James Kirkwood for sixty-six years.
Mrs. Kirkwood was born February 28, 1914, in Edina, Missouri, the only child of the late George Krueger and Mayme Kurtz Krueger. She was a magnificent wife and mother. She was the true matriarch and head of her family and she inspired everyone who knew her with her determination and love of life. Maurine loved animals—especially birds and dogs—and she enjoyed being outside with her flowers. A woman of great energy, Maurine founded St. Joseph’s High School’s first women’s basketball team in Edina, MO. In later years, she lived life fully and took great pleasure in traveling with her husband and visiting with family and she remained fully-engaged in her life until the end.
Maurine is survived by a daughter, Carolyn K. Mandes, and a son-in-law, Michael F. Mandes, of Phoenix, AZ; a son, James R. Kirkwood, and a daughter-in-law, Bessie Kirkwood, of Amherst, and five grandchildren, Ginger K. Mandes, Jeffrey K. Varszegi, Katherine A. Kirkwood, James K. Mandes and Elizabeth L. Kirkwood; and a great-grandson, Max Varszegi.
A funeral mass was conducted at 10:00 A.M., on Saturday, February 28th, 2009, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Monsignor J. Kenneth Rush officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Maurine’s honor to the Amherst Humane Society, P.O. Box 614, Amherst, VA 24521.
