Illiniwek Chapter Hosts Japanese Vistors
The Illiniwek Chapter of the Missouri Archeological Society hosted a group of student visitors from Kai, Japan. The group toured the Illiniwek Village Historic Site near St. Francisville on Tuesday, learning about the Native Americans who one inhibited the area.
“It’s part of an exchange program with Keokuk’s sister city, Kai, Japan,” explained Karen Sparrow of Keokuk.
The groups take turns visiting every other year.
While at the Illiniwek Village, students got the opportunity to see a program which included a buffalo hide and skull, models of what the village structures were believed to have looked like, and the history of the area, as well as work with Archeologist Roger Boyd on some actual excavation of the site.
