Keokuk, Iowa is getting ready to rock on Saturday, June 7, 2008, with the ‘2nd Annual Terry Scott Musician Memorial Jam’. This Memorial Jam is to honor musicians from the surrounding area who have passed away. Terry Scott played for the Bad Habit Band prior to his death in April 2006. Rather than a funeral his family decided to have a music jam to celebrate Terry’s life rather than mourn his death. It was then that Bad Habit decided to make it a tradition and continue the jam each year not only Terry, but rather, ALL local musicians that have passed away. The 2007 Memorial Jam was a huge success and many people wanted to be able to contribute money. Since there was no foundation established yet, it was decided to choose Keokuk Kid Zone as the recipient of the proceeds of the jam. This helped raise some much needed funds for the program. They have also been chosen as 2008 recipients of proceeds.
The 2nd Annual ‘Terry Scott Musician’s Memorial Jam’ is being held on South 5th St., between Main and Johnson St. in Keokuk. The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Shane Murphy singing the National Anthem, followed by an opening speech from Keokuk Mayor David Gudgel. Kid Zone Director, Laurie Mendenhall, will also have some opening thoughts to share. Once the opening ceremony is complete, the Jam will begin with different musicians taking the stage every hour on the hour. There will be two outdoor stages in use all day, from 12 noon until 8:00 p.m. At that time, the jam will move inside TJ’s House of Music where the festivities will continue until 1:00 a.m. In all, 13 bands will be donating their time to play at this Memorial Jam in honor of musicians that have passed.
There will be activities going on throughout the day such as a dunk tank and face painting. Kid Zone will be providing boxes for children to paint and color and to turn the boxes into mini cities. Food will be served on the grounds by Medicine Eagle Council, Inc., serving rib eyes, hamburgers, and hot dogs. Soda and water will be available on the grounds as well. Opportunity to order a DVD of the 2008 ‘Terry Scott Musicians Memorial Jam’ can be ordered with prepayment.
Bring your family and bring your lawn chairs. It’s a great day to bring the family out and enjoy local live music and support a good cause. Proceeds from this event will benefit Keokuk Kid Zone.
