HANNIBAL – MoDOT and other local officials are keeping an eye on U.S. 61 near Alexandria in Clark County for possible flooding later tonight. “We anticipate having to close U.S. 61 near Alexandria this week due to the water going over the road,” said MoDOT Area Engineer Jennifer Hinson. “Right now the Mississippi River is above flood stage about two feet, but the Des Moines is down again, so we’ll just continue to monitor the situation,” she said.

Hinson said the message boards are in place, and MoDOT crews are monitoring the area to determine if it needs to be closed. “Driving through water across the road can be dangerous, so as soon as we deem it a safety issue, we’ll close it,” she stated.

If the road is closed, motorists will need to follow the detoured route or consider other routes into and out of southeastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois.
