JENNIE G. SCARLETT
Jennie Grace Scarlett, 77, of Keosauqua, Iowa, died Tuesday morning, April 22, at her daughter’s home in Gorin.
She was born the daughter of Benjamin and Flora (Courtney) Lee on a July 11, 1930 on a farm northeast of Stockport, Iowa.
Jennie went to a one room county school and later attended Stockport High School.
She was united in marriage to Joe Beames in December 1946. To this union three children were born. Jennie married Jack Mills in November 1955, and to this union two children were born. She married Harry Scarlett in December of 1960. To this union, two children were born.
Jennie worked as a waitress in a café and at the Hamburger Inn and Santa Fe Reading Room in Ft. Madison. She was a homemaker for a few years before going to work at Head Start for four years. Jennie moved on to the Good Samaritan Center in Keosauqua for 13 years. After her retirement, she volunteered at the Neighborhood Center.
She was a member of the Christian Church in Keosauqua.
Jennie’s hobbies included reading, walking, writing short stories, and poetry. Most of all she liked to be around her children and grandchildren. She collected coffee cups and mugs.
She was preceded in death by her: parents; two children, Carol Mills and Howard Scarlett; a husband, Jack Mills in 1959; a grandson, Robert Coop; two sisters, Jean and Jane, and a brother, Robert.
She is survived by: three daughters and two sons, Jackie and husband Robert Coop of Gorin, Connie and husband Rick Lee of Davenport, Iowa, Kathy Scarlett of Ottumwa, Robert J. Beames of Keosauqua, and Terry Beames of Winfield, Iowa; two sisters, Sylvia Parks of El Dorado Springs, MO, and Ruth (James) Whan of Rock Island, IL; grandchildren, Dustin, Jeannie, Chasity, Tebble, Tracy, Gary and Jennifer; two special grandchildren, Jeannette and Alisha, that helped take care of her; 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 25, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. in the Keosauqua Christian Church in Keosauqua, IA, with Reverend Bill Shewmaker officiating. Pallbearers were Rick Lee, Jerry Jones, Jeremy Moore, Carl Ferrell, and Bobby John Beames. Interment was in the Thompson Cemetery in rural Van Buren county.
