Velma S. McMurry
Velma Sophia McMurry, age 95, of Edina, Missouri, died Friday, February 29, 2008, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Edina, Missouri.
She was born January 19, 1913, at Grandin, Missouri, the daughter of John L. and Martha Jane Armes Jones.
On July 23, 1954, in Scotland County, Missouri she was united in marriage to James Raymond McMurry and he preceded her in death on January 26, 1993.
Mrs. McMurry was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Richard L. Gentle, one daughter, Sharon C. Harding, four sisters, and three brothers.
Surviving are one son, Howard Gentle and wife Laveta of Doniphan, Missouri, one son-in-law, Alfred Harding of Washington, Missouri, eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Velma was born in Grandin, Missouri and moved to St. Louis when she was young. She was a mother, farm wife and hard working business owner and a Licensed Practical Nurse. She moved to Knox County, Missouri in 1954 where she owned and operated a boarding home for the elderly in Knox City for many years.
She was a member and Sunday School Teacher at the Knox City United Methodist Church during the 1970’s and 1980’s.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2008, in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri. Reverend Ken Green officiated the services. Burial was in the Colony Cemetery.
Music was provided by Carol Hayes, organist and Karen Stone, soloist
